Understanding the Lineage
Overview
“The Current cannot be taken. It can only be received.”
Unlike Duskborn, Ridgeborn, or other transformative lineages, Tideborn are not created through curses, bites, rituals, or magical conversion—not in the overwhelming majority of cases.
A Tideborn is born into the Current. No amount of desire, study, sacrifice, or violence can create one outright. The Current recognizes its own before their first breath.
Because of this, Tideborn are considered a true lineage rather than an infectious or transferable condition. The Current, however, is not always so simple as birthright or nothing.
Two Temperaments
Nature
While all Tideborn share a connection to the Current, not all are alike. They are broadly recognized as belonging to one of two natural temperaments.
These are neither ranks nor castes, but reflections of the aquatic creatures from which their ancestral lineage descends.

Descended from solitary or apex aquatic species, they often value patience, precision, close family bonds, and protection of those they consider their own.

Descended from cooperative species, they often emphasize extended family, mentorship, shared responsibility, and community over isolation.
Pools and Schools
Society
Tideborn society is shaped by family, ancestry, and the waters from which each community emerged.
Many organize themselves into Pools or Schools. Pools are often smaller ancestral or family groups, particularly common among Predator Tideborn, while Schools tend to emphasize extended kinship, shared responsibility, and communal support.
Tradition is often preserved through oral history, songs, migration routes, and stories tied to rivers, lakes, coastlines, and hidden waterways. Elders are valued for their memory and experience, but leadership is generally earned through trust, service, and an understanding of the Current rather than age alone.
Though many Tideborn maintain homes near natural water, they are not isolated from other lineages. Some live openly among the Hearthborn, while others preserve secluded communities hidden from ordinary society.
Gifts of the Current
Strengths
- •Full transformation between legged and tailed forms.
- •Exceptional swimming ability and comfort at depth or in open water.
- •Heightened senses connected to weather and water, including approaching storms, nearby currents, and shifting tides.

Bound to the Water
Weaknesses
- •Prolonged separation from natural water gradually weakens a Tideborn, dulling their senses and Gifts.
- •Their tail cannot fully lie. Strong emotion may force an involuntary shift, making concealment difficult during moments of high stress.
- •The Current does not reward those who seek power through violence, ambition, or deception.
- •Severe bodily trauma affects a Tideborn much as it would any other Born.
- •Contaminated, stagnant, or dead water provides no benefit and may be actively draining.
Between Land and Water
Role in Opaline
Within Opaline, Tideborn often serve as marine biologists, environmental scientists, fishermen, divers, emergency responders, healers, navigators, conservationists, and guardians of local waterways.
Their sensitivity to weather, currents, and the condition of natural water makes them invaluable when floods, storms, contamination, or unexplained aquatic disturbances threaten the community.
Tideborn also serve as living custodians of histories carried through rivers and migration paths long before Opaline was founded. Where others see only water, the Tideborn often recognize memory, movement, and warning.
Their presence reminds the other Born that Opaline does not end at the shoreline. The waters surrounding it are part of the community as well.

Common Misconceptions
“Tideborn must remain constantly submerged.”
False. Regular contact with natural water is necessary for long-term wellbeing, not continuous immersion.
“A Tideborn's tail is permanent and always visible.”
False. Most Tideborn spend the majority of their lives in legged form and transform by choice, circumstance, or strong emotion.
“You can become Tideborn through injury, ritual, or force.”
False in nearly every case. True transformation is a birthright. Rare exceptions occur only through the Current's own choice, never through force or engineered ritual.
“Attacking a Tideborn can grant an outsider some of the Current's power.”
False. The Current does not reward violence or ambition in any form.
“Tideborn blood is a reliable ingredient for spellcraft.”
False, or at least unreliable. Tideborn blood taken without consent is known to behave unpredictably in spellwork.
“Predator Tideborn are inherently dangerous or aggressive.”
False. Predator Tideborn are territorial and protective of their own, not violent by nature.
“The Current does not command the path. It reveals where every choice will carry us.”
