Overview

The Hearthborn are humanity—the foundation upon which every community is built. While they possess no innate supernatural abilities, they are defined by their adaptability, determination, and capacity for growth.

Throughout history, the Hearthborn have built civilizations, preserved knowledge, and repeatedly proven that courage often outweighs power.

Most citizens of Opaline are Hearthborn, living ordinary lives unaware of the hidden world that exists alongside their own. A select few, however, become aware of the Born and choose to stand beside—or against—them.

Physiology

Hearthborn are mortal beings, living natural lives governed by time, age, and mortality.

Unlike the other Born, they are not bound by ancient instincts, magical callings, or supernatural hunger.

Their greatest strength lies in their freedom to choose their own path.

Everyday Life

Society

Hearthborn society encompasses nearly every aspect of daily life within Opaline.

They serve as doctors, teachers, police officers, firefighters, clergy, merchants, artists, elected officials, and countless other roles that keep the town alive.

While most remain unaware of the supernatural, trusted individuals may be brought into the confidence of the Concord when circumstances require it.

The Town

Role in Opaline

The Hearthborn are the heart of Opaline.

Whether aware of the hidden world or not, they are the reason the town exists. Every business, family, school, church, and civic institution owes its existence to them.

While other Born may shape the shadows, the Hearthborn shape everyday life.

Common Misconceptions

“Hearthborn are weak.”

False. While lacking supernatural gifts, history has repeatedly shown that determination, intelligence, and unity can rival raw power.

“All Hearthborn are unaware of the Born.”

False. Though most remain unaware, trusted individuals, including certain members of law enforcement, medical professionals, civic leaders, and the Oathborn, may know the truth.

“Hearthborn cannot stand against the supernatural.”

False. Preparation, courage, and knowledge have often proven more valuable than supernatural strength alone.

“The fire within the hearth is not the greatest flame because it burns the hottest... but because it endures.”

No fangs. No claws. No magic. Sounds like a disadvantage, doesn’t it? I wouldn’t be so sure.

A note from Lyra

Don't underestimate ordinary.

Most people who call Opaline home are Hearthborn. If you enjoy grounded stories, everyday heroes, and ordinary people confronting extraordinary events, Hearthborn may be the perfect place to begin.

There's another interesting possibility, too. Hearthborn are the only lineage capable of becoming another lineage through roleplay.

So choosing Hearthborn doesn't necessarily mean you know where your character's story will end.
